About the Commonwealth Safety Management Forum

The Commonwealth Safety Management Forum is an industry group for Commonwealth, Australian Capital Territory and associated agencies which exists primarily to facilitate strategic advice to member agencies on Occupational Health & Safety (OH&S), return to work, premium management, and associated training and education.

Its other objectives include providing a forum for the exchange of ideas and experience; providing the Safety, Rehabilitation and Compensation Commission (SRCC) and Comcare with input and advice on technical and policy/guideline development; and providing an industry view to government and the SRCC on legislative provisions and their impact on member agencies, including through representation on the Employer Commissioner’s Group (ECG).

The Forum membership comprises 71 member agencies from the Commonwealth and Territory governments and Government Business Enterprise (GBE) arena. Its mail list includes over 90 personnel from across Australia. At its regular general meetings, held six times per year, members exchange information, and listen to guest speakers dealing with topical OH&S issues. Representatives from Comcare provide updates to every meeting on latest developments in prevention and rehabilitation.

The Forum has an active role in preparing policies, procedures, and guidelines to address common OH&S needs identified by member agencies. These documents are developed through small working groups comprised of member agencies, and the outcomes are circulated widely to the membership for comment prior to adoption.

There are three categories of membership within the CSMF:

  • Full membership
  • Additional Membership
  • Associate Membership

Full Membership is open to all agencies that come within the jurisdiction of the OH&S (CE) Act 1991 and the SRC Act 1988, and any other agencie/s that the Executive sees fit to nominate and are endorsed by the membership at a general meeting. This membership is at the corporate or agency level, and generally represented by staff with National responsibilities.

Additional Membership exists to enable other staff members from the Full Membership Agency to participate in the CSMF activities and events, such as the regular meetings, conferences etc. and the costs of this classification of membership is at a reduced rate.

Associate Membership is for those individuals, professional bodies, industry associations and organisations that are not eligible for either Full Membership or Additional Membership.

The forum meets every two months and the agenda for meetings includes opportunities for networking, presentations from guest speakers and presenters, a dedicated 30 minutes each meeting for Comcare news, and the general administration associated with running the forum.

The fees associated with membership are due and payable by 31 May each year. Multiple year membership is available and discounts shall apply in these cases. The following schedule of fees are applicable for the current (2005) year.
